Mansfield’s Myth of Manliness

Harvey Mansfield, a Harvard professor, has been criticized for his outdated and misogynistic views on women, as presented in his book "Manliness" and an article in the Weekly Standard. Mansfield argues that "manliness" is characterized by aggression and assertiveness, suggesting that women inherently lack these traits and therefore are less present in professional fields. Mansfield's writings also include troubling perspectives on rape, implying that male aggressiveness and female vulnerability are natural, and controversially suggesting that the capacity for rape could be linked to greatness. These views have raised concerns about his suitability as a professor, particularly in light of their potential impact on female and other gendered students.
