The Fly Must Be Squashed
The author criticizes the Fly Club's decision to remain an all-male institution, calling the president Robert M. Carlock's justification for the vote hollow and paternalistic. Carlock claimed that women would not enjoy being in a community that is divided over their presence, which Frank compares to the racist logic used in the 1950s to justify segregation. Frank points out that the elitism and exclusivity of final clubs are longstanding issues, and the refusal to admit women is just one aspect of their discriminatory practices. While acknowledging that final clubs occupy a minor role in Harvard life, Frank argues that their actions tarnish Harvard's reputation and values.| Creator |
