100 Students Picket Pi Eta Club Party

Nearly 100 students picketed the Pi Eta Speakers Club on Saturday night in protest of a club newsletter that referred to women as "pigs" and "slobbering bovines." The protestors carried signs and distributed copies of the offensive newsletter to raise awareness about its content. The demonstration proceeded peacefully while a party continued inside the club. The newsletter, which was accidentally delivered to a female student's mailbox, sparked outrage for its dehumanizing language towards women. Pi Eta members claimed the newsletter was a parody and not reflective of their attitudes, but protestors argued that even as a parody, it was deeply offensive. The protest has prompted the student-faculty Committee on College Life and the Undergraduate Council to consider actions against the club. The Pi Eta Club had been placed on probation the previous fall after an initiation party resulted in several members requiring medical treatment for excessive alcohol consumption. Protest organizers aimed to highlight the issue of sexism and insensitivity within the club, with many women expressing fear and disgust after reading the newsletter.
