Reported Campus Rapes Nearly Double from 2013 to 2014

The Harvard University Police Department reported a significant increase in reported rapes on campus, with numbers nearly doubling from 17 in 2013 to 33 in 2014. This rise was part of a increase in overall reported sexual offenses, from 40 in 2013 to 43 in 2014. Out of the 33 reported rapes in 2014, six were deemed unfounded after investigation. The statistics, complying with the Clery Act, also showed Harvard leading the Ivy League in reported sex offenses in the previous year. The release of these figures coincides with heightened campus dialogue on sexual assault, underscored by a survey revealing that 31% of surveyed senior women experienced some form of sexual misconduct, with a significant portion not reporting the incidents.
