Delayed Reaction
On April 11, Dean of the College John B. Fox Jr. condemned the Pi Eta Speakers Club newsletter for its offensive portrayal of women, calling it a repudiation of the College's values. The following day, President Bok echoed Fox's condemnation, stating that such tasteless and insensitive references have no place in a civilized community. On April 17, Radcliffe President Horner released a stronger statement, describing the newsletter as "shocking" and an affront to human dignity, suggesting it eroded confidence in the quality of life and education for women and men at Harvard. However, despite the strong content of Horner's message, its delayed timing was criticized. As a key advocate for women at Harvard, Horner's late response was seen as disappointing and inconsistent with her role in safeguarding women's interests, especially given the prompt reactions from Fox and Bok and the student protest that occurred ten days earlier.| Creator |
