Anthropology Prof. Gary Urton Abused Power During Sexual Advance Toward Student in 2012, University Investigation Finds
In 2012, Anthropology professor Gary Urton made a sexual advance toward then-graduate student Jade d'Alpoim Guedes by inviting her to a hotel room. The Office for Dispute Resolution (ODR) later determined that Urton's actions violated Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) rules on interpersonal relations and unprofessional conduct, though it did not classify the actions as sexual harassment because FAS policies at the time did not explicitly prohibit faculty-student sexual relations. These policies only changed in 2016 to explicitly ban such conduct. Urton was placed on administrative leave following a Crimson investigation revealing multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against him. Guedes criticized Harvard's Title IX policies, particularly those in place before 2016, for failing to adequately address sexual harassment and called for retroactive policy changes. She also suggested that investigations into Title IX complaints should be conducted by third-party investigators. Guedes refused to participate in ODR interviews, citing them as traumatic and intimidating.| Creator |
