The A's and the Bees
In 1980, Harvard University reprimanded a faculty member, Martin L. Kilson, for sexual harassment following a formal complaint by student Helene Sahadi York '83. York reported that Kilson attempted to kiss her while she was seeking advice on a paper topic. Dean Rosovsky censured Kilson, requesting an apology letter, and Kilson subsequently took a sick leave. This was the first formal complaint to reach such a stage, though there have been other complaints. York testified in favor of House Bill #5172, which aims to outlaw sexual harassment in Massachusetts and allow victims to seek damages. She also organized a panel on sexual harassment at the Kennedy School Forum, where multiple women shared their experiences. In response, Assistant Dean Judith B. Walzer promised to improve the University's communication on how to file harassment complaints.| Publisher |
