Professor Scolded for Harrassment

In December 1979, Harvard officially reprimanded faculty member, Professor Martin L. Kilson, for sexual harassment for the first time in its history. This action came after Helene S. York '83 filed a complaint against Kilson for attempting to kiss her during his office hours. The reprimand, issued by then-Dean Henry A. Rosovsky, included a censure and a requirement for Kilson to apologize to York. Rosovsky also warned Kilson that repeated offenses could result in the revocation of his tenure. Kilson admitted to the impropriety but claimed his actions were misinterpreted. Following this incident, more students sought advice on handling sexual harassment, though no further formal complaints were filed that year, raising concerns about Harvard's commitment to addressing such issues.
