Anthropology Prof. John Comaroff Placed on Administrative Leave Following Allegations of Sexual Harassment
On August 25, 2020, Harvard placed Anthropology and African and African-American Studies professor John L. Comaroff on paid administrative leave following allegations of sexual harassment and retaliation against students. Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Claudine Gay announced this decision via email to faculty and students, citing the seriousness of the allegations and the need for a full review. Comaroff, denied the allegations, claiming the decision was punitive and violated confidentiality rules. The Crimson previously reported that at least three female students had contacted Harvard’s Title IX office about Comaroff, and the Anthropology department had restricted his teaching and office use in the spring. Comaroff was slated to teach a course with his wife Jean Comaroff, who taught alone in the spring due to the department's restrictions on her husband.| Creator |
