RUS Will File Complaint Charging Discrimination

The Radcliffe Union of Students plans to file complaints against Harvard University’s affirmative action policies with the federal Departments of Education and Labor. This decision follows a meeting with federal officials to explore options for investigating Harvard's tenure and financial aid processes for women. RUS’s preliminary complaint alleges a lack of commitment by Harvard departments in hiring and promoting women. The recent non-tenure decision for Theda R. Skocpol by the Sociology Department has intensified RUS’s actions. RUS argues that Harvard has a history of denying tenure to qualified women, which they believe violates the Department of Education’s Title IX statute against discriminatory practices that adversely affect students. Despite this, Harvard’s associate dean Edward L. Keenan denies any discrimination in the tenure process.
