The UC’s Persistent Gender Predicament
The Undergraduate Council at Harvard continues to struggle with a male-dominated culture and lack of respect for female and non-binary representatives, 21 years after the first female UC president was elected. Despite efforts to increase gender parity and recent leadership by women, institutional barriers persist. The UC had a significant gender imbalance in 2017, with 26 male, 17 female, and one non-binary representatives. While the UC has made some progress, including increased outreach to prospective female candidates and more women in leadership roles, challenges remain. The unofficial "grooming" process, where mostly male chairs select male underclassmen successors, is one such barrier. The editorial emphasizes that more and different actions are needed to achieve gender equality and encourages non-male students to run for UC positions to help change the organization's culture.| Creator |
