Alleged Rape Stirs Campus
Harvard experienced a significant incident when Joshua M. Elster '00 was arrested on three counts of rape and two counts of assault and battery against another undergraduate. The incident occurred on January 28, but the woman sought help the next day. Harvard University Police initially failed to fully report the events, omitting the incident and arrest from its public log due to claimed human error and confidentiality requests. Following criticism, Harvard Police began revamping its record-keeping system. Elster, who maintains his innocence, has been released on $10,000 bail under strict conditions and on a leave of absence from the University. The case has sparked increased activism regarding sexual violence on campus, leading to the formation of the Coalition Against Sexual Violence by students who felt the incident did not elicit a sufficient campus response.| Creator |
