Insecurity
The rape of an undergraduate woman near the Quad raised concerns about the quality of security at Harvard, particularly outside the River Houses. The assault occurred at around 1 a.m. in front of Hilles Library, an area frequented on weekend nights. Until recently, no security guard patrolled the Quad area, whereas each River House has its own watchman. In response, the Radcliffe Union of Students and House committees are advocating for better security measures. Students Organized for Security is collaborating with Harvard police to establish self-defense classes. A University committee on security is also considering additional measures such as enhanced lighting and trimming bushes. Despite these efforts, some students remain uneasy, as evidenced by a complaint filed by a woman after an off-duty guard refused to ensure her safe passage across the Quad. The police have no leads on the suspect.| Creator |
